Dear Knanaya brothers and sisters,This is to share with you all a clarifications and the position of KCCNA based on the recent developments, including a circular by Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath read in the Syro Malabar churches in North America. As expected, the above mentioned circular contains provisions that will:

രണ്ടാമതായി കുടുംബത്തെ വിഭജിക്കുന്ന കാര്യം. കുടുംബം വിഭജിക്കാതെ നോക്കേണ്ടത് കെട്ടുന്നവന്റെ കടമയാണ്. കുടുംബം വിഭജിക്കാതെ നോക്കുവാനായി അവന്ഒരുമിച്ചു സീറോ മലബാറില്‍ ചേരുവാന്‍ അവസരം കൊടുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കുടുംബം ഒരുമിച്ചു പോകേണ്ടതിന്റെ ആവശ്യം അവനെ മനസ്സിലാക്കി അങ്ങോട്ട്‌ വിടുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി കെ സി സി എന്‍ എ സഹായിക്കണം അല്ലാതെ അവന്റെ കൂടെ കൂടി വരട്ടു ന്യായം പറയുകയല്ല വേണ്ടത്.

The Secretary of KCCNA is also a national council member from KCS Detroit & Windsor. They have member families there who are not knanaya, this issue was raised in this blog. The issue is about a family whose grandparents are not knanaya and they fabricated documents to be knanaya. Then they have a family with an adopted child, who is not knanaya. Then they have a family where a lady married out of knanaya and now she is married to a knanaya man and she is a member in KCS and also church. Her children from prior marriages are not members in either KCS or church. KCS Detroit has specimen families of all varieties. So in essence they are not worried of endogamy or knanaya rules in their own family but want to shove it down others throat. The speech of Myalkkara from detroit accuse the Archbishop of throwing a bomb in to the community with intention to destroy the community, what an idiot is he. Then there is a speech of the vice president kizakkekadan, that is claimed to be a bold, must be seen speech.....................which is joke, he is another idiot.
ReplyDeletePeople need to understand that the circular is clear as it can be given by any authority. These idiots who are crying have no idea how to draft a rule/directive/decree etc. The circular clearly says that the personal parishes are for knanaya people and that the spouses/children who are not knanaya shall not be members. Then the issue of dividing families, why do these idiots cry for the families being divided here in north america when they do it in kottayam (based on the interpretation of the circular by Myalkkara). Actually no one is dividing any family. The rule is simple and practical. The personal parishes are for knanaya people only. If there is a family that is not 100% knanaya then they cannot be members of personal parishes of knanaya. There is no division. When the knanaya law of personal parishes are applied then they just have to go to a near by syro malabar parish.
Stop the hunger strike and participate in the activities of the weekend. Give some sensible advice to the idiots Myalkkara, Anto and Sabu. This hunger strike will be a black mark for the entire knanaya community.
Are you really a member in Knanaya community? If not, please keep out. You used the word 'idiots' several times. You also wrote "Actually no one is dividing any family". Yes, members in one family should not be the members in different parishes and the family should not be divided. Soon after we agree their proposal, the next step will be to keep all the family members under one parish (knanaya parish). Soon after that happens with one family, we have nothing for our own. Kottayam dioceses will no longer a knanaya dioceses, and that is exactly their ultimate goal. Now, who is the 'idiot'?

1) For Example In Kottayam Mr, Mathew who is born of knanaya perents marry a non knanaya and after a few years the spouse dies or if Mr. Mathew get divorced and marry a knanaya girl. Now as per practice he become kna again. In this situation does Mr. Mathew is a kna as per "KARMAM KONDU" I strongly believe NO. What about your stand.
2) Situation 2: Same situation above and Mr. Mathew got two kids in his first marriage and his second marriage is with a Knanaya girl and in that marriage he got another 2 kids. Can you please define in the family of Mr. Mathew who is kna and who is not kna or are they belongs to one church or not?. What about one family as per catholic church? (The main problem KCCNA is finding under the new formula).
Situation 3: Mr. Mathew marries to a Knanaya girl and does not have any children. So he decided to adopt a child from an orphanage. Mr. Mathew don't know that if the child he adopted is from a knanay parents or not?. As per the rule Mr. Mathew and wife is Knanaya by birth and the child is not kna by birth or Karmam kondu we don't know or is it because of the Karmam of Mr. Mathew the child is not a kna. Please explain. Again the issue of family should be considered as one unit will took place.
Please send an e-mail with your answers and explanations ( if you have balls). Our bishops think about all these issues and the agreement they signed is the best possible solution to our situation both legally and as per canon.
If things continue to happen the way since the first family went out in Kottayam, everything would have been fair and well for us. But that is going to change from now on, if the new order comes in to effect. According the new order, only the spouse and children are going to be the members of the near by syromalabar parish. That seems fair and good at first sight. But when the knanaya person who married a non knanaya, remains holding the MEMBERSHIP IN OUR PARISH, there is a problem. Which is, we will be forced to issue a membership to his non knanaya spouse and children eventually. Syro Malabar is not saying that now, but they will make us do that in the future and we will have to agree with it. Because, as we discussed earlier, "members in one family should not be the members in different parishes and the family should not be divided". At that point, we have nothing for ourselves. Kottayam will no longer for ourselves and that is exactly they are looking forward to.
DeleteAbout family unity , it is pure personal decision by an individual whether he/she wants to be with his /her family with same church or not. If the person wants to be united with his family he /she can join the non knanaya parish with his/her spouse , nobody is preventing them from doing that. This is exactly what we are doing at Kottayam. But there diocese is asking the person to fill the PLEK ( permitted to allow the Eparchy of Kottayam) form. Just imagine that if the person is not willing to do so , what will happen ?? The Church can’t expel a person from a parish , they can ban sacraments if the person does anti church activities. Marriage is not an antichurch activity. The only thing church can do is deny the curry for marriage , but the person will get it through legal channel. We assume that in future the authorities may ask us to give membership to these non knanaya spouce / children , it is just an assumption. If it happens in the future we will do everything to prevent that. Why we should worry about a future assumption ???

DeleteGreetings from Diaspora Knanaya Catholic Congress (DKCC). DKCC executive committee met to discuss the recent developments including the planned protest in Chicago as well as what is said to be outcome of certain discussions in the recently concluded Syro Malabar Synod.
On behalf of all the diaspora Knanaya Community, we would like to extend our congratulations to Mr. Sabu Chemmalakuzhy for his efforts and that of KCCNA which appears to have forced the above said discussions in the Synod, subsequent agreement between Major Arch Bishop, Arch Bishop of Kottayam and Bishop of St Thomas Syro Malabar diocese of Chicago and the most recent circular from the Bishop of St Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago amending the previous directive issued on Dec 20th 2012.
We believe that these developments are a great step in the right direction, given the previous position of the Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago, that allowed non-Knanaites, membership in “Knanaya Ethnic Parishes”, through Marriage of a Knanaya Person. By this new directive it has become clear that membership in Ethnic Knanaya Parishes is limited to those who are born to Both Knanaya Parents. This decision establishes a clear identity, for our parishes distinct from that of Syro Malabar parishes, outside the jurisdiction of the Arch Diocese of Kottayam. Moreover, we believe that this decision is anchored on the provisions of Canon Law for different Sui Juris Churches thus taking the first step towards our ultimate goal.
Canon 33 - A wife is at liberty to transfer to the Church of the husband at the celebration of or during the marriage; when the marriage has ended, she can freely return to the original Church sui iuris
We want to share with you few facts for your understanding. Some of these are technical within the church rules. This will give all of you why we believe the recent development from the Synod and the circular issued by Bishop Jacob Angadiath is a positive step.
1. Kottayam diocese was created for Southists (or Knanaites). The only way to become a Knanite is being born to Knanaya Father and Mother – That is the ethnic Identity.
2. If a Man or Woman marry outside – They seek permission to leave the Knanaya diocese of Kottayam to join non-Knanaya diocese. Unlike the popular belief, the Kna diocese is not removing him or her. In the event of death or Divorce, if the Kna in an exogamous marriage (man or woman) remarry a Kna – they are part of the Kna diocese again – though any kids in the Exogamous marriage will remain part of the non-Kna parish as their “Proper Parish” (a canonical term for the parish where a catholic is domicile), even though they may receive all sacraments from a Kna parish except delegation (kuri) for marriage which needs to collected from “proper Parish”.
3. The question is whether Canon law allows for a husband and wife to be in separate parishes (as the recent decisions of the Synod) – It is allowed when persons of 2 separate rites (for example Latin and Syro) get married – in such cases, both have the option to remain part of their respective rites in their respective domicile parishes without changing rites. Again the Kna who enter into exogamous marriage always have the freedom to “seek Permission” – if he does not – he can remain but not his spouse and Children because “Knanaya Parish is an Ethnic Parish”. It is the Choice and decision of the Knanaya Spouse to separate the family in 2 parishes.
4. Then the question is whether how the Synodal decision can withstand in the civil court. According to the religious freedom clause in most western countries including the US – A religious entity is free to define its rules. An individual have the freedom to practice his or her religion as long as he/she is abide by the rules of that religion. Based on this, the Synod and Diocese – both entities can define laws that governs their respective areas (synod on the rite and Diocese within its geography) – If St. Thomas Diocese of Chicago says – we have created Ethnic Parishes for Knanaites and Only Ethnic Knanites (those who are born to Knanaya Mother and Father) are members, then that is the law of the diocese and will withstand in any court of law in the US.
Delete5. We believe this is the best we can get from the Syro Malabar Hierarchy within the framework of the Rescript back in 1986. Anything more than this needs to come from Rome. We believe since Major Arch Bishop is a signatory to the most recent agreement, it may withstand the scrutiny of Oriental Congregation.
Therefore:
1. We believe the current decision will protect the ethnic identity of Knanaya Parishes because only those who are born as a Kna will be the member – this will withstand challenges within courts and have the protection of canon law (extension current laws for rites) and one could argue we almost got the identity as another rite different from rest of the Syro Malabar Catholics.
2. If for some reason, Rome goes beyond the decision of the Major Arch Bishop and clarifies that the non-kna spouse and Children be included – then it will be a problem – that is the biggest risk.
3. We can question the Morality of this decision – the reality is that the Ethnic identity of the community can only maintained this way and in this case, community and the church gives the option for the Knanite who engage in exogamous marriage to join the nearby Syro-Malabar parish and it is their choice if they want keep the family in 2 separate parishes.
4. One way it is a victory for the community based on where we were in the US – however it is not a complete victory for the reasons outlined above – If it was a directive from Rome – we would have been more upbeat.
We certainly understand there are risks to this new developments and we are not fully there, so we need to continue to apply the right pressure and engage in further negotiations. In addition, all Knanaites regardless where they are, should have the freedom to establish their parishes and continue their traditions unhindered.

Chicago KCS Action Council welcomes this decision wholeheartedly as KCS Action Council had made a recommendation to KCCNA for a peaceful dialogue to solve the current matters as per the general opinion of members of our community. My name is Jose Kurian Enchenattil ( current DKCC General Secretary) , what I am writing is my personal views . DKCC had taken a decision regarding current issues and DKCC chairman will publish that soon.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the synod decision which is published by Mar Angadiyath as a circular is well acceptable because it clearly says that knanya parishes are only for knanaya people. About family unity , it is individual decision by a person whether he wants to be with his family with same church or not. As my understanding Church can’t expel a person from a parish , they can ban sacraments if the person does anti church activities. Marriage is not an antichurch activity. The only thing church can do is deny the curry for marriage , but the person may get it through legal channel.
I strongly suggest to implement this new formula worldwide including Kottayam , now in Kottayam our Diocese requesting people who wants to marry from outside to fill the PLEK( Permitted to Leave Eparchy Of Kottayam) form. If he likes to join with his wife in the non knanaya parsish , let him to do this but if he wants to remain in the knanaya parish allow him to do that , let it be his choice to be united with family or not. Before crucifying me please understand Why I am suggesting this to implement in Kottayam.
A lot of our young knanya youth are not getting suitable partners due to several problems . For boys it is mainly due to qualification , the intelligence level is not same for all , how we will neglect these unqualified boys who at some time may be very active in KCYL. For girls the problem is reverse , not getting qualified boys. As a normal custom girls will join at her spouse parish , so they don’t have much problem. If we check with our parish priests in Kerala we will understand the real problem. Our unqualified boys never wants to go out from our parishes but who will give partners for them ??? This is also true for handicapped boys and girls ….
KCCNA’s attempt for sui juris church is a step in the right direction but let us try to climb the steps one by one.

Mulavanal and he telephoned 5 times and then texted and then called through Alex chettan, the chairman of samyutha samara samithi. Tomy did not take the phone nor answered the text but admitted he got all calls and text. This is a fact and it is explicitly announced in the general body meeting at Chicago by alex kannachanparampil.

Mulavanal and he telephoned 5 times and then texted and then called through Alex chettan, the chairman of samyutha samara samithi. Tomy did not take the phone nor answered the text but admitted he got all calls and text. ReplyDeleteI think my message is getting longer so one more thing and that is it. The syromalabar Bishops ( Kottayam Bishop is the only one Knanaya in amoung about 46 or so ) are trying to divide our community in America because they know KCCNA is stronger than a Bishop right now in America and we also have the support of all the other Knanya families outside India. They want to create the old situation where the Knayana people divided into Catholics, Jacobites, Malankara etc. So our strenth will be gone. They have a small group here in every association that supports this formula. They are not coming out and hiding in sleeper cells. So don't be fooled with the deceiving new formula whcih will divide and ruin our community in the long run.
I also challenge the courage of our Knanaya Bishops and Priests to participate in the Ordination of the new Bishop in Chicago while the people supporting them ( really feeding them) and having a hunger strike outside.
Ultimately we will win. It takes struggle. Always support who stands for the true Knanay sprit.

Think before taking the Action. Hunger strike decision was made by few individuals. It was never consented by any general body or pothuyogam in any association as of today other than kcs. We as an individual knanaya loving faith filled human beings have to decide whether to attend the hunger strike to destory our identity and ruin a celebration of mathrabishakam.
We should also get the courrage and fight to get our own bishop in the near future.

ReplyDeleteFor thousands of years, to be a member of knanaya community, there are two requirements. 1. Janmam (birth to knanaya parents). 2. Karmam (deed-practice endogamy). Kottayam diocese (Knanaya Churches) was created for Knanaya community not the other way around. Therefore, knanaya churches all over the world need to obey the community's requirements above for its membership. That is why Mar Makil, Mar Chulaparambil, Mar Tharayil, and Mar Kunnasseri followed the community rule. Now, Moolakkat/Angadi/ Alancheri/Oriental congregation wants only Janmam as the membership requirement to Knanaya community. Karmam does not matter! Do whatever you want; you still have membership? What a joke! Karma is more important than Janmam because karmam is an adult person's actions under free will. It is a choice made freely knowing fully well what the consequences are! What is the hidden agenda of Syro Malabar in pandering to the few who willfully rejected knanaya thru their karmam but, want to crawl back into the community? It is part of the master plan to destroy independent knanaya church and control it's assets.
Why you addressing to Vettuveli about Knanayam?. He is NOT loyal to his bishop or Knanaya community.

Of course the efforts of our Knanaya hero Mr Sabu Chemmalakuzhy made a world of difference to open the eyes of Syro Malabar hierarchy. Now that they are open to our cause, can we not give the benefit of doubt and refrain from proposed strike? We can bend a stick but do not break it. We need to keep our door open with Rome through our Major Archbishop Alanchery to attain our final destination just like in Kottayam. We should be fighters but fight for the right cause.

But, I love to see our community united and move forward to the right direction. A vast silent majority are keeping quite. I cannot keep quite anymore even I am not going to be in the good books some of you. Speak up guys. It is democracy in action.
Finally, it is Holy See that is appointing a Bishop. Remember, KCCNA is catholic organization and it is also in the best interest of KCCNA to refrain from strike during this episcopal ceremony .

Why Bishop Angadiath cancelled the meeting? Why he doesn't want to meet Knanaya people? Is it due to the disagreement of his Knanaya policy ? I am not a pro strike or against strike. But I am ageist lavishly spending poor peoples charity money for a bishops ordination.

6. We gave benefit of doubt and thought he will listen to our pleadings but he replied saying you have no right for existence in this world as Knanaya and the establishment of Koattayam Diocese was a mistake
7. We gave the benefit of doubt that he will treat us as his folks but he listened to the KANA minority and sent circulars to get them in Knanaya Churches membership

DeleteCanon 9 of the Code of Oriental Canon Law on Marriage states that the wife who belongs to another rite is at liberty to join the rite, diocese or parish of her husband at the time of marriage or during its duration. Canon 24 of the Code of Canon Law says that a custom contrary to Divine Law is null and void. The teachings of Bible are Divine Law. Since the Church is founded on the basis of teachings of Christ with a view to propagate the Gospel, it is out of question for a custom to have the force of law under the Canon Law or Divine Law.

Any one knowingly enters into alliances and they know the consequences at that time. . It is the practice in not only catholic but also in yacobite rite. and Malakara rite.

1) The word Knanya Church/ Mission is misleading.
!) No body ever defined ‘knanaya church/mission’.
!!)This is nothing but a Syro Malabar Church/Mission under Bp. Angadiyath -

!V) Where the vicar /director is a Knanya priest.
V) Till to date nobody is given membership in these Churches/Missions
Please do not get confused the Knanaya Church to that of an endogamous church. [ Bp. Angadiyath always stated that all churches /Missions in Chicago Syro Malabar Diocese are non endogamus. In the 2014 KCCNA Convention at Chicago Bp. Moolakkattu clearly stated that Knanaya church does not mean endogamous church.
2) Knanaya youth not able to find eligible partners:
Do we have the demographic information of Kottayam Diocese ?
[As per the 2011 Census, in Kerala, we have 1084 men for 1000 women. Nation wide [ India }, the figure is we have 908 male for every 1000 female]
What happened to our boys? Did they loose interest in studies? When did our Bps./Priests/Community leaders noticed this phenomena? What did they do to correct it? Can any thing more to be done? Etc.
Let our leaders try to inculcate the community feeling in the minds of our adults/children. Let them explain why should one marry within, the benefits and the consequenses of marrying within and from out side.
The girls and their parents be told that: Even in the western universities, male students are outnumbered by females – in some institutions there are twice as many female fulltime students as there are male. The divorce rate is increasing in Kerala. Those who marry within will get the help / support of a close knit community.
Lastly, We use a nail cutter to cut nails. Not an axe.
I read some place: “ Lack of Planning on your part, does not constitute an emergency on my part”
So, my friend, study the problem in detail. Explore all the options. Try to find real solutions

Dear Knanaya Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Like many of you I have been reading the current emails in American Kna, Spoozhi etc.,and I question the authenticity of some of the emails. A SSamithy was formed in Chicago which comprised of KCS executive and Kaikarans of both Knanaya Churches to deal with the currents issues we are facing. As the meeting with Mar Angadiath was cancelled ,they met the VG and Chancellor of Syro Malabar under the leadership of Mr Alex Kannachanparambil and demanded that the circular defining membership should come officially from Mar Angadiath and should be read last Sunday in all Knanaya parishes and missions. They agreed and honored our request.
We also told him that we are not going to be satisfied with the circular and our ultimate goal is to have the jurisdiction of Kottayam extended to all over the world. We told VG that the Knanaya community will decide the membership criteria for the Knanaya people. They promised to work towards that our goals, but requested us to avert the strike as it looks bad for all Indian Catholics. It was a very fine meeting and we told them that we will request KCCNA who declared strike to reconsider the proposed strike in the light of recent developments. This is what happened so far
KCCNA is a vibrant Knanaya organization and I have been very much part of it from its inception and served as Gen Secretary and RVP. Yes there are forces within trying to divide us and dissolve KCCNA. I clearly stated in 2008 New Jeresey convention in my report I front of Mar Angadiath and Mar Moolakatt and other dignitaries that we are not happy with the membership criteria and we our own diocese and bishop.
Of course the efforts of our Knanaya hero Mr Sabu Chemmalakuzhy made a world of difference to open the eyes of Syro Malabar hierarchy. Now that they are open to our cause, can we not give the benefit of doubt and refrain from proposed strike? We can bend a stick but do not break it. We need to keep our door open with Rome through our Major Archbishop Alanchery to attain our final destination just like in Kottayam. We should be fighters but fight for the right cause.
Another meeting of Chicago KCS action council is coming up tomorrow and please make your decision based on that. I am not a member of that council either. But, I love to see our community united and move forward to the right direction. A vast silent majority are keeping quite. I cannot keep quite anymore even I am not going to be in the good books some of you. Speak up guys. It is democracy in action.
Finally, it is Holy See that is appointing a Bishop. Remember, KCCNA is catholic organization and it is also in the best interest of KCCNA to refrain from strike during this episcopal ceremony .

ReplyDeleteEvery thing is cheap., our president, shame to say now as our present is also very cheap because he did not attend even the phone calls for face to face meeting with Mar Agadaith a Mr. Alex kannachamparambil , the elected convener of samrashka samithi revealed it in the general body meeting. . Everybody knows he is not legally competent to declare for a strike to create image for his nephew without have a at least a telephonic conversation with the unit executives. He may a majority of his mafia group. But he should understand that KCCNA is not his family property and he is nothing with in few months.

The following reasons sighted by KCCNA leadership in rejecting the signed document by Mar Angadiath, Mar Alanchery and Mar Moolakkattu is NOT valid:
ReplyDelete1.Redefine the meaning of “Knanaya”, which we would respectfully discard since they have no authority or right to do so.
•The splitting of family units; which is against the fundamental teachings of Catholic Church.
With this agreement nobody is redefining the meaning of "Knanaya". Instead they are only affirming that Knanaya parishes under the St. Thomas Syro Malabar diocese of Chicago are personal parishes for Knanayites and non-knanaya spouses and children won't be members of those parishes. It is the most possible solution to the issue created by the 1986 rescript from Rome. By denying membership for non-knanaya spouses and children in Knanaya parishes the document is essentially certifying our parishes are endogamous. No other church in the world can deny membership to those who wants to join the church through marriage. With this agreement we are allowed to do that to protect our endogamous identity. At the same time the document is not saying that the knanaya person who marry from out will remain or has to remain in the Knanaya parish. It is that person who needs to make a decision in that regard. The church authorities cannot write a law that will expel someone from a parish because of his marriage. So, this agreement is the best they can do for us to resolve the membership issue in Knanaya parishes in North America. If we reject it the community will end up in a permanent state of paralysis.
No one other than us, even Pope Pious X has ever defined Knanayism. It is us who define Knanayism as for those who are born to Knanaya parents and practice endogamy. That will never change. Since the non-endogamous Knanaya person's spouse and children will not be members of the Knanaya parish, that family is not a knanaya family. So, by becoming a member of a non-kanaya family that person also looses membership in the Knanaya community. So the definition that Knanaya by birth and by deed is also true here. Only that we cannot force him/her to leave the Knanaya parish. Nowhere even in the decree from Pope Pious X is stated that a knanaya person who marry a non-knanaya looses membership in Knanay parish and has to leave. Nobody will ever write something like that in a document. Those who say we need exactly as in Kottayam don't understand exactly what we do there.In Kottayam diocese we transfer non-endogamous knanayites to other non-knanaya parishes under other dioceses with a request from them to leave. We established that long time ago and people followed it for the sake of the community without much opposition. We can do that here also by advising them to leave and to keep their family together in the non-knanaya parish. Most of them will make that choice. But those who insist to stay will stay but the chapter is closed when that person die.
The second argument that this agreement splits the family is completely wrong. As I stated above, the document doesn't say that the Knanaya person who marry a non-knanaya spouse will remain or has to remain in the Knanaya parish. He/she can keep his/her family in one parish by joining his/her spouse's parish. But if he/she choose to stay in the Knanaya parish where his/her spouse won't be a member, it is him/her, not the church splitting the family. It is not the church's law that all members of a family has to be members of the same parish. Here in America, myself and my wife can choose to be members at two different Latin parishes if we want. Those who argue that this agreement splits the family and not acceptable are supporting the cause of KANA to accept non-knanaya spouses and children into the Knanaya parishes.

Dear Domy , you are absolutely right , This is exactly what we are doing at Kottayam. But there diocese is asking the person to fill the PLEK ( permitted to allow the Eparchy of Kottayam) form. Just imagine that if the person is not willing to do so , what will happen ?? The Church can’t expel a person from a parish , they can ban sacraments if the person does anti church activities. Marriage is not an antichurch activity. The only thing church can do is deny the curry for marriage , but the person will get it through legal channel. We assume that in future the authorities may ask us to give membership to these non knanaya spouce / children , it is just an assumption. If it happens in the future we will do everything to prevent that. Why we should worry about a future assumption ???

Thanks a lot for your observations, yes we have to study the situation in details , definitely we have to encourage our youth to find partners within the community, last 10 years during summer holidays KCCME (Knanaya Catholic Congress Middle East) conducting 3 day camp for our youth in Chythanya. The main objective is to bring our youth together , during the camp always one session is regarding Knanayisam. This year we got more than 70 youth from USA,UK,Qatar,Kuwait ,Saudi,Oman ,UAE. Next year hoping to get youth from more countries. Also we are planning a global youth leadership camp at Dubai during x-mas time.

I think KCCNA should give its members of local units to exress their views and decisions before rejecting the new agreement. KCCNA has in the past claimed to consider discussing with local units if a written agreement can be presented. Without doing it can create long lasting divisions and wounds after this ordination.

THAT MIGHT BE THE REASON CURRENTLY THEY ARE NOT RESPONDING TO RECENT MEMBERSHIP POLICY WHICH IS A BLOW TO THEIR FACE. Think before taking the Action. Hunger strike decision was made by few individuals. It was never consented by any general body or pothuyogam in any association as of today other than kcs. We as an individual knanaya loving faith filled human beings have to decide whether to attend the hunger strike to destory our identity and ruin a celebration of mathrabishakam.
We should also get the courrage and fight to get our own bishop in the near future.

They are getting ready in the heaven to attend the most sacred episcopal ordination of their son. Did anybody think that parents can forgive to the people who making strike during the most sacred moments of their son's life. So a better solution for this is let the ordinatioan done smoothly. atlanta or newyork or tampa people sit in front of your nearest zeromalabar church. Chicago people will strike another day but not in the ordination day. I got a very serious doubt that how come a catholic organisation can make a strike during the episcopal ordination of a catholic priest?

The following reasons sighted by KCCNA leadership in rejecting the signed document by Mar Angadiath, Mar Alanchery and Mar Moolakkattu is NOT valid:
ReplyDelete1.Redefine the meaning of “Knanaya”, which we would respectfully discard since they have no authority or right to do so.
•The splitting of family units; which is against the fundamental teachings of Catholic Church.
With this agreement nobody is redefining the meaning of "Knanaya". Instead they are only affirming that Knanaya parishes under the St. Thomas Syro Malabar diocese of Chicago are personal parishes for Knanayites and non-knanaya spouses and children won't be members of those parishes. It is the most possible solution to the issue created by the 1986 rescript from Rome. By denying membership for non-knanaya spouses and children in Knanaya parishes the document is essentially certifying our parishes are endogamous. No other church in the world can deny membership to those who wants to join the church through marriage. With this agreement we are allowed to do that to protect our endogamous identity. At the same time the document is not saying that the knanaya person who marry from out will remain or has to remain in the Knanaya parish. It is that person who needs to make a decision in that regard. The church authorities cannot write a law that will expel someone from a parish because of his marriage. So, this agreement is the best they can do for us to resolve the membership issue in Knanaya parishes in North America. If we reject it the community will end up in a permanent state of paralysis.
No one other than us, even Pope Pious X has ever defined Knanayism. It is us who define Knanayism as for those who are born to Knanaya parents and practice endogamy. That will never change. Since the non-endogamous Knanaya person's spouse and children will not be members of the Knanaya parish, that family is not a knanaya family. So, by becoming a member of a non-kanaya family that person also looses membership in the Knanaya community. So the definition that Knanaya by birth and by deed is also true here. Only that we cannot force him/her to leave the Knanaya parish. Nowhere even in the decree from Pope Pious X is stated that a knanaya person who marry a non-knanaya looses membership in Knanay parish and has to leave. Nobody will ever write something like that in a document. Those who say we need exactly as in Kottayam don't understand exactly what we do there.In Kottayam diocese we transfer non-endogamous knanayites to other non-knanaya parishes under other dioceses with a request from them to leave. We established that long time ago and people followed it for the sake of the community without much opposition. We can do that here also by advising them to leave and to keep their family together in the non-knanaya parish. Most of them will make that choice. But those who insist to stay will stay but the chapter is closed when that person die.
The second argument that this agreement splits the family is completely wrong. As I stated above, the document doesn't say that the Knanaya person who marry a non-knanaya spouse will remain or has to remain in the Knanaya parish. He/she can keep his/her family in one parish by joining his/her spouse's parish. But if he/she choose to stay in the Knanaya parish where his/her spouse won't be a member, it is him/her, not the church splitting the family. It is not the church's law that all members of a family has to be members of the same parish. Here in America, myself and my wife can choose to be members at two different Latin parishes if we want. Those who argue that this agreement splits the family and not acceptable are supporting the cause of KANA to accept non-knanaya spouses and children into the Knanaya parishes.

If any one has any sense will understand the latest circular read in knanaya churches in America is the best in time. It clearly says non knanaya spouses and children can not be a member of knanaya churches but will be the members of nearby Syro church. Even 1911 Bula didn't say this provision, and there is no written ordinance in kottayam diocese that you can send a person or his family to a nearby Syro church. This was a local arrangement between kottayam bishops and local Syro bishops.

Thank you very much for your and KCS executive committee’s leadership in calling a meeting of your local action council regarding the announced hunger strike in Chicago. As we face the ongoing crisis and difficulties in preventing outside forces from wiping out the identity of this endogamous community, there are times when we have to make very difficult choices. Such difficult decisions are not because we want to, but because we are left with not many alternatives. I am confident in the community loving members of Chicago and their unyielding commitment to safeguard the pillars of our community. I am very delighted to note by your statement that the signed members, “unanimously decided to request KCCNA President and KCCNA executive members to have a formal discussion with KCCNA Patron, His Excellency Arch Bishop Mar Mathew Moolakattu, before 09/25/14 to find an amicable solution for the 48 hour hunger strike declared by KCCNA for the betterment of the community in light of the mixed feelings of the community members towards the hunger strike”. I would wish to inform you and your members that within last month itself several attempts were made by KCCNA through VG, Fr. Mulavanal to have meetings with Mar Moolakkattu and it was plainly rejected. You might be also aware that last week, our VG cancelled a meeting with Mar Angadiath that could have been very crucial and useful.
KCCNA is an organization responsible for an entire community and so it has to have some policies of their own and not always dependent on outside entities wishes and desires to make decisions. As you very well know, for matters that need planning and organizing like the current hunger strike, we cannot wait till the last minute to decide. Already many plans have been made and several process are underway to make this difficult journey possible. You and your executive committee personally experienced the difficulties and confusions when there were possibilities of cancelling the rally in Chicago that you and Chicago community members so daringly carried out in the middle of winter. This community remains ever grateful for that sacrifice. KCCNA never rejected past invitations for meetings, its always the other side who has consistently rejected and denied open transparent discussions. We will be in Chicago for two days and we are available for discussions that would help our community.
We firmly believe that unless we are willing to face the test of discomfort, pain, suffering and sacrifice for the sake of maintaining the identity and dignity of our community we will never earn the respect and attention of outsiders. Without witnessing our willingness to withstand pain and suffering they may never understand the depths of our commitment. We believe in the way of Our Lord Jesus Christ who took the Cross for all of us. We follow the path of Mahatma Gandhi’s peaceful yet firm decision to protest and embrace suffering for the freedom of his people. I look forward to the unconditional partnership and support from you and the great community loving members of Chicago and rest of the country for the hunger strike.

DeleteI am a Kna and I think this is bullshit. People say that some 72 families came to India on AD300. so it's been 1714 years. Now assume that once somebody is born and he have his kids by the age of 40. Also think that an average there are three kids per family ( we have 8 to 9 kids till last generation. but be concervative and consider people who don;t have kids or the ones who is not married (Priest, sisters etc), or the one who married outside Kna. So lets go with a conservative number 3). howmany poeple would be now ? 1.5 raise to 42 (1714/40 = 42 and it's 1.5 since both husband and wife are from kna so 3/2). how much is it? around 2.5CR. and how many Kna we have today? hardly 2 lacks. Can somebody explain that?

ReplyDeleteGreetings from Diaspora Knanaya Catholic Congress (DKCC). DKCC executive committee met to discuss the recent developments including the planned protest in Chicago as well as what is said to be outcome of certain discussions in the recently concluded Syro Malabar Synod.
On behalf of all the diaspora Knanaya Community, we would like to extend our congratulations to Mr. Sabu Chemmalakuzhy for his efforts and that of KCCNA which appears to have forced the above said discussions in the Synod, subsequent agreement between Major Arch Bishop, Arch Bishop of Kottayam and Bishop of St Thomas Syro Malabar diocese of Chicago and the most recent circular from the Bishop of St Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago amending the previous directive issued on Dec 20th 2012.
We believe that these developments are a great step in the right direction, given the previous position of the Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago, that allowed non-Knanaites, membership in “Knanaya Ethnic Parishes”, through Marriage of a Knanaya Person. By this new directive it has become clear that membership in Ethnic Knanaya Parishes is limited to those who are born to Both Knanaya Parents. This decision establishes a clear identity, for our parishes distinct from that of Syro Malabar parishes, outside the jurisdiction of the Arch Diocese of Kottayam. Moreover, we believe that this decision is anchored on the provisions of Canon Law for different Sui Juris Churches thus taking the first step towards our ultimate goal.
Canon 33 - A wife is at liberty to transfer to the Church of the husband at the celebration of or during the marriage; when the marriage has ended, she can freely return to the original Church sui iuris
We want to share with you few facts for your understanding. Some of these are technical within the church rules. This will give all of you why we believe the recent development from the Synod and the circular issued by Bishop Jacob Angadiath is a positive step.
1. Kottayam diocese was created for Southists (or Knanaites). The only way to become a Knanite is being born to Knanaya Father and Mother – That is the ethnic Identity.
2. If a Man or Woman marry outside – They seek permission to leave the Knanaya diocese of Kottayam to join non-Knanaya diocese. Unlike the popular belief, the Kna diocese is not removing him or her. In the event of death or Divorce, if the Kna in an exogamous marriage (man or woman) remarry a Kna – they are part of the Kna diocese again – though any kids in the Exogamous marriage will remain part of the non-Kna parish as their “Proper Parish” (a canonical term for the parish where a catholic is domicile), even though they may receive all sacraments from a Kna parish except delegation (kuri) for marriage which needs to collected from “proper Parish”.
3. The question is whether Canon law allows for a husband and wife to be in separate parishes (as the recent decisions of the Synod) – It is allowed when persons of 2 separate rites (for example Latin and Syro) get married – in such cases, both have the option to remain part of their respective rites in their respective domicile parishes without changing rites. Again the Kna who enter into exogamous marriage always have the freedom to “seek Permission” – if he does not – he can remain but not his spouse and Children because “Knanaya Parish is an Ethnic Parish”. It is the Choice and decision of the Knanaya Spouse to separate the family in 2 parishes.
4. Then the question is whether how the Synodal decision can withstand in the civil court. According to the religious freedom clause in most western countries including the US – A religious entity is free to define its rules. An individual have the freedom to practice his or her religion as long as he/she is abide by the rules of that religion. Based on this, the Synod and Diocese – both entities can define laws that governs their respective areas (synod on the rite and Diocese within its geography) – If St. Thomas Diocese of Chicago says – we have created Ethnic Parishes for Knanaites and Only Ethnic Knanites (those who are born to Knanaya Mother and Father) are members, then that is the law of the diocese and will withstand in any court of law in the US.
Delete5. We believe this is the best we can get from the Syro Malabar Hierarchy within the framework of the Rescript back in 1986. Anything more than this needs to come from Rome. We believe since Major Arch Bishop is a signatory to the most recent agreement, it may withstand the scrutiny of Oriental Congregation.
Therefore:
1. We believe the current decision will protect the ethnic identity of Knanaya Parishes because only those who are born as a Kna will be the member – this will withstand challenges within courts and have the protection of canon law (extension current laws for rites) and one could argue we almost got the identity as another rite different from rest of the Syro Malabar Catholics.
2. If for some reason, Rome goes beyond the decision of the Major Arch Bishop and clarifies that the non-kna spouse and Children be included – then it will be a problem – that is the biggest risk.
3. We can question the Morality of this decision – the reality is that the Ethnic identity of the community can only maintained this way and in this case, community and the church gives the option for the Knanite who engage in exogamous marriage to join the nearby Syro-Malabar parish and it is their choice if they want keep the family in 2 separate parishes.
4. One way it is a victory for the community based on where we were in the US – however it is not a complete victory for the reasons outlined above – If it was a directive from Rome – we would have been more upbeat.
We certainly understand there are risks to this new developments and we are not fully there, so we need to continue to apply the right pressure and engage in further negotiations. In addition, all Knanaites regardless where they are, should have the freedom to establish their parishes and continue their traditions unhindered.

ReplyDeleteഒരു കാര്യം വളരെ അസ്സന്നിഗ്ത്തമായി തെളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. മുലവനാൽ അച്ഛൻ പറഞ്ഞത് പച്ചക്കള്ളം. ഒരു വൈദികൻ ഒരിക്കലും ചെയ്യാൻ പാടില്ലാത്ത കാര്യം. എന്തിനു വേണ്ടി. ഇത്രയും നാൾ കുതികാൽ വെട്ടിയും കാല് വാരിയും സ്ഥാപിച്ചെടുത്ത സ്ഥാനം ഒന്ന് കൂടി ഉറപ്പിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി മാത്രം. ഒരു കാര്യം ഓർമയിൽ ഇരിക്കട്ടെ. തീറ്റി പോറ്റിയ സമൂഹത്തോടും സമുദയതൊദും ചെയ്ത ഈ ചതി കാലം പൊറുക്കില്ല. ഇതിനു തിരിച്ചടി ഇന്നല്ലങ്കിൽ നാളെ താങ്കളേയും കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
നാളെ പിതാക്കന്മാരോടു ഒന്നിച്ചിരുന്നു താങ്കൾ കഴിക്കാൻ പോകുന്ന പാലപ്പവും കോഴി കറിയും ഒരു സമുദായത്തിന്റെ കൊല ചോറാണ് എന്നാ കാര്യം മറക്കേണ്ട. താങ്കൾ കഴിക്കുന്ന മൃഷ്ട്ടാന്ന ഭോജനം ആമാശയത്തിൽ ചെന്ന് പരിവര്ത്തനം സംഭവിച്ചു വേറൊരു രൂപത്തിൽ പുറത്തുവരും. താങ്കൾ ഈ നുണകൾ പറഞ്ഞു നേടിയ നേട്ടങ്ങളും താങ്കൾക്കു തന്നെ വിനയായി ഭവിക്കും. ഓര്ക്കുക കാലം ഒന്നിനും മാപ്പ് തരില്ല.

KCCNA DECLARED STRIKE WITHOUT COUNSUTING THE MEMBER UNIT OR WITHOUT EXCEPT KCS CHICAGO. KCS ADVICE KCCNA TO CONSULT WITH MAR MATHEW MOOLAKATTU AS MAJORITY OF PEOPLE OF CHICAGO WAS AGAINSIT IT.

It is a great pleasure to know that the hunger strike declared by KCCNA has been called off after a friendly dialogue between His Grace Arch Bishop Mar Mathew Moolakatt and KCCNA leadership . Chicago KCS Action Council welcomes this decision wholeheartedly as KCS Action Council had made a recommendation to KCCNA for a peaceful dialogue to solve the current matters as per the general opinion of members of our community. KCS requests to KCCNA that any future decision involving unit level action needs to be thoroughly and methodically discussed and approved through the proper bodies of KCCNA in order to keep the spirit of the federal character of our great association intact .
KCS thanks Arch Bishop Mar Moolakatt and KCCNA President, Tomu Myalkarapurathu, for taking an extra step to solve the matters surrounding this particular hunger strike.
