Let me use my limited knowledge gained from what I have read and heard and try to give my comparison of the two formulas:<br /><br />1) Mar Makil’s Century Old Formula: It has been, and still is the practice of the Archdiocese of Kottayam to completely honor the Family value and the Blessed Sacrament of Marriage taught by the Catholic Church and the Bible, that through the Sacrament of marriage, husband and wife shall become one flesh, and thus request the Knanaya who opts to marry from a non-knanaya parish to voluntarily join the non-knanaya parish for the sake of their family unity and to be obedient to the teachings of the Catholic Church. If the Syro-Malabar church interprets this as against the teachings of the Catholic Church and the establishment of Kottayam diocese itself as a mistake by Rome, then let’s see how their recent formula relates to the teachings of the Catholic Church about marriage and family!<br /><br />2) SMBC 2014 Formula: If a knanaya parish member opts to marry a non-knanaya parish member, then the knanaya member will continue to be the member of the knanaya church and his non-knanaya spouse and their children will continue as members of the non-knanaya church. While I wonder if they have taken into consideration all the practical situations like adoption, Divorced knanaya parent with custody of their non-knanaya children, single knanaya parent with non-knanaya children etc, what wonders me the most is the fact that through this decision they will have to rewrite the versus in Bible like Genesis 2:24; Mathew 9:5; Ephesians 5:31 etc to read as follows for the sake of these mixed marriage couple: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh, but shall remain members of two parishes”! Furthermore they have to make a new addition to the Statement of Intentions preceding their marriage Vows to read as follows: “Do you accept the decision of the SMBC 2014 and agree that the non-knanaya spouse and their children shall continue as members of their non-knanaya parishes for the rest of their lives”? And the Bride and the Groom shall respond “I DO”!!!!!!!!!! J<br /><br /> Based on the two formulas above, I personally believe that Mar Makil’s Century old formula is much more closely related to the values of the family that our Catholic Church teaches than the SMBC formula. Now if there is a better comparison that our Church hierarchy was convinced that the SMBC 2014 formula is better that Mar Makil’s formula, then they have an obligation to make us understand that, with their rational rather than expecting us to accept what they read in a positive way. The good side I see about the decision from the SMBC is that it has opened the door for us to compare the existing two formulas and get the opinion of the people to see which they feel is more appropriate from a Christian/catholic’s stand point of view of a FAMILY.<br /><br /> But to achieve all this we should first and foremost become united as one community and prayerfully analyze the situation in our own mind without blindly swallowing what is thrown at us. I hope the Unification of the Chicago Knanites will stay strong and withhold any attempt for division and that this unification will spread to the other units and we can together as one Knanaya community convince Rome that our Mar Makil’s century old formula is more Catholic than the recent SMBC 2014 formula rather than just fighting for Endogamy. ( Jos...The burning issues of the Knanaya community<br />( Joseph Pathyil)<br />My friend Stephen Thottananiyil invited my comments on the critical issues of the Knanaya community today. It is with reluctance that I undertake the task. “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.”<br />Allow me to refer briefly and broadly to the Southist history in India of nearly 17 centuries. Our ancestors were adept at survival skills. In the 4th century Thomas of Kana and his people were warmly received by the then king of the place. The community settled near the port of Kodungallor for obvious trading reasons. They were on excellent terms with the native Christians and non-Christian neighbours. When the chieftain of Kozhikode attacked Kodungalloor, the Southists moved with their scant belongings to Kochi and other safer places. Through the centuries the community demonstrated its genius for adaptation in order to ensure its survival. The Knananites were merchants in Kaduthuruthy, and when the king of Travancore plundered the merchants, they bought rice fields in Manjoor, Neendoor, Kallara, Kaipuzha etc. Others carried on trade in Thodupuzha, and agriculture in other places. In 1663 the community offered to pay all expenses when Father Chandy<br />Parambil was consecrated as the first Indian Bishop in the Knanaya church of Kaduthuruthy, thus ensuring his life-long indebtedness to the Southist community. Members of the Southist community helped finance Fr. Joseph Kariattil to go to Rome and become a bishop in 1783. In 1886 Father Makil petitioned Rome to be under the Latin bishop rather than a Nordist bishop. In 1910 Bishop Makil negotiated with the brother bishops of Kerala to get their support for a separate diocese. In the division that followed in 1911 the newly erected vicariate lost a couple of parishes. Mar Makil also had to accept personal jurisdiction rather than territorial jurisdiction (which is at the very root of the dispute of membership in the Knanaya parish). But Bishop Makil accepted these as inevitable. <br />The Knanaites were always a tiny community, a microscopic minority, but has had a genius for survival. This brief , but incomplete, history cited above, brings me to the impasse of today. Stephen asks me: “Can you please suggest how we can protect Knanaya community from extinction?”<br />My considered opinion is that in order to ensure our survival we need to adapt. Let me explain:<br />I had not expected that the Syro Malabar synod would accede to the demand of the Archbishop of Kottayam not to give membership in our churches to spouses and children of those who married outside the community. This is a landmark decision and a victory of no small consequence. The pronouncement of the synod has pre-empted the objections of the Oriental Congregation, and potential discussion at the Conference of American Bishops. As for membership in parishes to those born of Knanaya parents, who married from outside, I think they cannot be denied: not in law, not in church; not in America. Membership in associations is an entirely different matter.<br /><br />As the son of one of the founding fathers of The Knanaya Catholic Mahajana Sabha, presently called Knanaya Catholic Congress, as one who helped draft the constitution and by-laws of KCCNA, as one who privately and then publicly opposed the concept of KCDCNA that would have spelled the death knell of KCCNA, as one who loves this community even as I approach four score years, I feel that the only way forward is to accept this historical decision. Some might call it a Pyrrhic victory; but in order to ensure the survival of the community globally, this is the only way. The membership started when the Mission was approved and continued when the it became a parish and continues till today. Toms Kizhakkekkattil Mathew was given the option to register as member by the Vicar and parish council members during the initial formation. He refused to join stating that Mar Angadiath told him that it was his choice to join the church established exclusievely for knanaya catholics. He is still currently the member of St Thomas Syro Malabar Catholic Church in Southfied, MI which is for non knanaya people. He even produced the kuri for his nephews baptism from the non knanaya church to the vicar. He is a looser and a liar. KCCNA gave him an award. All he has done for the knanaya community is that he sends hate filled emails along with the hijida kccna secretary. <br />The only church that does not have the balls to prevent mullapally from joining is Morton Groove church. That is because the so called endogamy leaders like thottapuram, koovan, koottooran, shiju, kulangara, kizhakkekuttu, kaniyali, nanikettavan etc have no interest in the community.
